I have to say, I enjoyed this a lot more than than I thought I would. I expected to but flip through and adore the art. However, I plant the autobiographical slice enthralling as well. Starlin has been in the manufacture for 40 years and had some interesting stories. Interspersed were picayune gems like what it was like to work on the Punisher.

Marvel had a few odd writing rules when information technology came to the Punisher. I was told right off, "If the Punisher appears in a console with some other character. other than his assistant, that person should be killed within the side by side few pages by either the Punisher or someone else. If the Punisher appears with any object, it should exist destroyed in an explosion as soon as possible."

Starlin is known generally for working on Curiosity'southward cosmic characters. He created Thanos and Drax, killed off Captain Marvel, is synonymous with Adam Warlock, and wrote the Infinity Gauntlet story Avengers: Infinity War is based on.. In add-on, he killed off Robin subsequently fans famously determined Jason Todd'due south fate. Also included in the book is a lot of his creator owned scifi and fantasy work.

A really beautiful book in between the biography and the illustrations book, because the guy is an illustrator in the comic world (more often than not super-hero, for Marvel, and science-fiction). I loved to seen those amazing art pieces, Jim Starlin accept some talents, and I really enjoy notice comic (often old 1) that I didn't really knew about. For the comic/illustrations fans.

Forth the style in my reading, I institute several images that brought back nostalgic stories from years ago. A well-done, polished text.

I presume this has been revised and tweaked since coming out every bit an ultra-collectible in 2011. It's a very slight read, and y'all need to be a connoisseur of comic cover art to become a lot out of the choice of artworks. That said, there are as well some wonderful pages and imagery across the whole visual spread represented hither, ranging equally it does four decades, from three-colour to fully digital. The script by Starlin is chattily autobiographical, and covers all his ups and many downs in the industry. He himself admits to never reading fine art books, and some will dearest the fact this is incredibly pictorial, only others may desire more grit and narrative nous about his career. On the whole, however, what I could review of the volume was very enjoyable.

'The Art of Jim Starlin: A Life in Words and Pictures' by Jim Starlin with Joe Pruett and Mike Marts is an overview of art interspersed with the story of a fantastic talent from 35+ years in comics.

Jim Starlin knew he wanted to be a cartoonist from an early age. He proficient his art while he was in the Navy. Eventually he was discovered by Curiosity and his career took off. He had a manner of revamping characters in titles that were failing like Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock. Forth the mode, he created the villain Thanos. He wrote the Infinity Gauntlet that the current series of Avengers movies is based on. He had his own comics and books. There were clashes with management and editors and corporations.

Mr. Starlin apologizes up front nigh being surly nearly his experiences, but I didn't experience he was at all. If anything, his stories and the easy way talks near his life feels like sitting down for a drink with an old friend. I've been a fan of his work for years and have read many of the stories he has written and illustrated. This was really a lot of fun to read.

I received a review re-create of this ebook from Aftershock Comics, Diamond Volume Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank yous for allowing me to review this ebook.

I only know the name Jim Starlin because of his work with AfterShock comics, the company that published this book. Simply I found this information very interesting.

In this book, Starlin talks through his work for Curiosity and DC: from Thanos to Captain Marvel to Batman. He knows most people get art books for the work and not the words, and thus this is not super prolific. I love information technology.

          His portfolio plates are cute.
I love the fine art for "Amid Madmen."
I really enjoyed learning virtually how the comic industry has evolved and inverse (for better and worse) throughout the years.
          His parting words are fantastic.

And while I don't like the three "Amber" short stories, I'chiliad glad they're included at the end of the book.

This is an incredible and honest autobiography past Jim Starlin, accompanied with his cute fine art. His business experiences as a freelance writer and artist are educational about how the comic book business used to exist from the 70's, leading upward to modern changes. Each period has its strengths and weaknesses, and Jim breaks downward the frustrations he had early on in his career as well as recently, along with the perks that take come from his creations, movie proposals, etc. Great book. Anyone who is a Starlin fan or a freelance author/artist should read it and learn from information technology.

A review of the career of i of my all-fourth dimension favourites comic authors narrated by himself with, of course, spectacular pieces of art.

As I was reding this volume, I really wanted to re-read all of his near iconic works, specially metamorphosis odyssey / Dreadstar, Breed, Thanos quest...

This man has given so and then many to the comic volume earth that is a offense he has not the recognition he deserves.

An obligated volume for every Jim Starlin fan, or comic book history aficionado.

I take quite a few art books, just this is the first i that I've actually read embrace-to-cover. Jim Starlin does a great job writing nearly his own creations, forth with providing thoughtful reflections on the fickle nature of the comic book biz. The book is also, of class, filled with Jim's gorgeous artwork. If you similar Starlin's piece of work, y'all Need to add this beautiful volume to your library.

Very enjoyable. I wish information technology had near twice equally much text. A lot of the battles with Marvel and DC are summarized in paragraph. It'southward too bad the author'due south experience with the new Avengers movie didn't arrive in.
